Hochadel, Abraham’s Engines says: Hinkley no. 121. 4-4-0. 15×20 in. cylinders. 54 in. drivers. 23 tons. 1847.08 Built as “Rockingham” for the Boston & Maine RR. 1862.03.11 Purchased for $4500 as “Dover” from the B&M, becoming USMRR Dept. of Virginia (1st)#2/“Dover.” 1862 Used on Richmond & York River RR. 1862.03-04, 1862.06-1864.02, 1864.04-07 Repaired at Alexandria. 1865 Used in North Carolina. 1865.07 Sold to W. L. Scott for $3,050.

Abdill, Civil War Railroads says: The U.S. Military Railroad engine DOVER was a 4-4-0 with outside frames and was acquired second-hand from the Boston & Maine Railroad. She was built by Hinkley & Drury in 1856, along with the EXETER; note the goose-neck coupling link hanging on the side of the tender. On August 27th, 1862, while running on the war-torn Orange & Alexandria Railroad, the DOVER was fired into by Confederates along the track a mile or two west of Burke’s Station.
