Photographic War History. The War For The Union. 1861-1865. No. 2538. A Pontoon Bridge on the James River. The boats and timbers forming bridge are carried on wheels. When the army needs a bridge. the boats are quickly launched, and anchored parallel with the currents; the timbers are soon laid; a bridge is thus formed, strong enough to permit the army to cross with the cannon and trains. The boats are then taken up, replaced on the wheels and carried with the army. [Taylor & Huntington stereo card]
