1861. The War For The Union. Photographic History. 1865. Execution of Captain Wirtz [sic], the Keeper of Andersonville Prison. The single life of Captain Wirtz [sic] (the notorious and brutal keeper of that awful prison pen at Andersonville) could never atone for his many crimes against humanity. He was convicted of brutally murdering helpless Union prisoners at Andersonville. He was sentenced to death. This view shows the scene on the scaffold in the yard of the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, just after the drop fell, and while Wirtz [sic] is hanging. [Taylor & Huntington cabinet card]
Katz, Witness To An Era, p199 says: Wirz’s body hangs while soldiers in the trees chant “Wirz, remember Andersonville!”
