Silverstone, Warships of the Civil War Navies says: The gunboat USS Proteus, built in New York in 1863–1864. While several photographs of members of this class of ship exist from their post-American Civil War commercial service, this is the only known photograph of a member of the class in original naval service as a gunboat.
