Wikipedia says: By 1863 [Samuel A.] Cooley had a photographic studio above his store located next door to the Arsenal. He sold his photographic business in May 1864 with the intent of returning to the North. He reappeared in Beaufort in 1865, where he opened a mercantile and simultaneously advertised himself as “Photographer, Department of the South”, doing contract work for the government.
