Hazlett, Olmstead and Parks, Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War says: The battery wagon, employing an arrangement similar to the gun carriage or caisson, connected to a limber for transportation. The wagon was a long-bodied cart with a round top, with the lid hinged. At the rear was mounted a movable forage rack for carrying long forage.

One of these wagons accompanied each field battery for the purpose of transporting carriage maker’ and saddlers’ tools, spare parts for carriages, harness, and other equipment and rough materials for the replacement of canvas.
